What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-traumatic stress disorder, often abbreviated to PTSD, is a mental health disorder that may develop after a person witnesses or experiences a traumatic event, such as:

Military combat

Acts of violence

Physical abuse

Psychological abuse

Natural disasters

Serious accidents

Experiencing trauma can leave a deep emotional mark that influences how a person feels, thinks, and acts long after the danger has passed.

People with PTSD often feel like they are reliving the trauma through flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories. These symptoms can be triggered by things that remind them of the event, even if they are no longer in danger. They may also feel constantly on edge, have trouble sleeping, or find it hard to trust others.

As well as triggering fear and anxiety, PTSD can provoke feelings of guilt, anger, or shame. It can make everyday activities challenging and affect work, personal relationships, and overall well-being. PTSD doesn’t just go away on its own, but the right treatment can manage symptoms and enable people to recalibrate their lives from trauma.

Understanding PTSD Treatment

Treating PTSD is a process that helps people manage their symptoms and regain a sense of normalcy. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution because PTSD affects everyone differently. Instead, treatment plans are personalized to fit individual needs and experiences. The goal of PTSD treatment is to reduce the intensity of symptoms, help people cope with triggers, and improve their overall quality of life.

The two main approaches to PTSD treatment are therapy and medication, often combined.

Therapy

Therapy is one of the most effective ways to treat PTSD. It allows people to talk about their trauma in a safe environment, understand how it’s affecting them, and learn coping strategies.

CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) is commonly used to treat PTSD. This talk therapy helps people challenge and change unhelpful thoughts which are keeping them rooted in fear and anxiety. The specific forms of CBT used for PTSD are:

  • CPT (cognitive processing therapy): This therapy helps people identify and change unhelpful thoughts related to their trauma. Someone who feels guilty about what happened can learn to reframe things, viewing them from a different perspective, and realizing they are not to blame for what they couldn’t control.
  • PE (prolonged exposure therapy): Prolonged exposure therapy helps people confront the memories and situations they’ve been avoiding because of their trauma gradually and under controlled conditions. Over time, this reduces the power those memories hold over them.

Medication

For some people, antidepressants are prescribed to help with mood and anxiety issues, while other medications may target specific problems like nightmares and insomnia. Medication aims to help balance the brain’s chemicals, reducing the fight-or-flight response often overactive in those with PTSD.

Keep in mind that finding the right treatment might take time. Different therapies or medications might be needed, and it may take patience to see improvement. With consistent care and support, though, people with PTSD can learn to manage their symptoms and feel more in control of their lives again.

EMDR for PTSD Treatment

EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a highly effective therapy used to treat PTSD. It’s different from talk therapies like CBT because it focuses less on discussing the traumatic event and more on how the brain processes the memory of the trauma. EMDR helps people reduce the emotional intensity of their traumatic memories, so they don’t feel as painful or overwhelming.

EMDR works by asking individuals to focus on the traumatic memory while at the same time following the therapist’s finger, a flashing light, or listening to sounds. These side-to-side eye movements help the brain process memories less distressingly. The idea is that trauma gets stuck in the brain, causing the intense reactions people with PTSD experience.

This form of therapy is often effective because it addresses the physical and emotional responses to trauma. People with PTSD usually react to triggers with powerful responses – feeling panicked or experiencing physical tension, for example. EMDR helps calm these reactions, enabling the person to think about the event without becoming overwhelmed.

EMRD usually requires multiple sessions, but many people notice improvement within the first few treatments. EMDR has been shown to help people feel more in control of their thoughts and emotions, reducing nightmares, flashbacks, and other PTSD symptoms. For many individuals struggling with the lasting effects of trauma, EMDR can be a life-changing treatment that helps them move forward without being controlled by their past.
